Previously in our blog we have mentioned that Apple is planning a big update for its latest operating system (OS). However, Apple decided to surprise us with completely new free OS, macOS Sierra. It is the fourth OS released in the last four years. Apple treats us with new one every year, giving us, your London Mac Repair Service, bread. Because new OS means new exciting features to fathom and new incompatibility issues to resolve.

Microsoft releases new OS every two-three years. Two-three years of work, design, and development. Even then each new release is accompanied with months of complaints and troubleshooting. It is not the case with Apple, however. Each new release is accompanied with months of complaints and necessity to purchase new software packages because little troubleshooting follows. But let’s not bemoan in vain and embrace the future. And the future begins with…

Imagine a meeting in Apple inc. People in suits, big round table, presentation screen, a person next to it declares: “Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve been working hard on improvements for our new release. And the subject of this meeting is yet another important improvement – the size of emoticons in iMessage.” Now it is three times bigger! Luckily, the bigger emoticons are not the only new development. With the new name, macOS Sierra, come Siri and Apple Pay integrated into the system, Auto Unlock, for Apple Watch owners, storage optimisation. Joking aside, there are new developments that are worth mentioning.

Seamless operation between Apple devices

Now you can copy a file or a text on your iPhone or iPad and paste it on your computer, and vice versa. Apple Pay is now available on Mac due to yet another interaction with your phone – Touch ID on your phone or tablet will work for authorisation on your Mac as well. Documents and Desktop on your Mac will be accessible on iPad, iPhone, and even another Mac that you have.

macOS Sierra Tabs and new file system

Tabs system in the Finder has been devised. Now tabs can be used in folders and some applications, allowing you to work with multiple folders or files in one window, just like in Safari, Chrome, or Edge. Yet, the new file system is a really grand development. It allows optimised storage for flash storages, faster backups, ability to manipulate physical hard drives into one volume (like RAID, but not RAID). However, there is still very little information on how will it interact with existing ones.

Daredevils may download BETA version of macOS Sierra from here and experience the future release. Business owners are strongly recommended to wait for further announcements.

As a place where you can Sell Your Mac and Sell Your Laptop, we have to look out for a fake product all the time. Counterfeiting is a huge industry. Lots of people worldwide are involved in this shady business, producing fake technology the sometimes may be visually indistinguishable from the original. Sometimes fake technology is even produced in the same factory with the original. “What is the difference”, you may ask. But fake goods quite often may not only be a poor investment, lack support services of the original manufacturer, but also hazardous, as the production does not follow the same quality control as originals.

Our guide how to spot a fake product.

Build, design, and performance

Quite often build and performance defects are easy to spot: ragged edges, cheap plastic body, things are not properly aligned, and etc. Production of counterfeit goods quite often uses cheaper materials or little to no quality control. When you take one of these devices in your hands you may notice how unexpectedly light the thing is. Boot the device and try to use it for a while. Note any error messages that pop up, slow performance, lack of or delay in touch-responsiveness, unusual clicking, buzzing or beeping sounds.

Product code, details and features

Make sure you check specifications of the product with the online listing or another point of reference. Check that you have the product you have ordered. Try the little things: ensure that cameras, fingerprint readers, wireless connectivity are in full working order. Take a closer look at the device and search for production details: serial number, model, service tag. Quite often you will be able to check service tag and serial number on manufacturer’s website. If you having troubles looking the device up, it could be a sign of warning.

It is very easy to skip terms and conditions assuming that it is all the same. It is not. It is crucial to familiarise yourself with all “formalities”. Especially the part about the warranty. For new items the warranty is normally at least one year, for refurbished items 6 months warranty is acceptable. The shorter warranty period is yet another warning sign.

The proverb “cheap man pays twice” has never lost its relevance. We are all tempted to get the “good deal” and find the cheapest price. However, you must never lose the boundaries of the sensible price range. Surely, in the case of refurbished items, the price will be lower than one of an official retailer, but even here a £50-laptop should make you stop and think. What may appear as a small sum of money, yet could be a small sum of money thrown away.

We witness apps that supposedly to clean and speed up Mac computer on every third computer that arrives in our London Mac Repair Service. Do they really work? What is the best way to optimise your computer?

So here is some computer science for dummies: imagine your computer as a creature with ten hands. It uses one hand to open your email, another – to go to access the Internet, another – to play music on your iTunes, and so on. It can handle several tasks at the time, but it is a limited number. At one point you decide that your computer it slow and you download this speed-up/optimisation app, occupying one of the hands permanently. Do you think the computer is going process more nor having 9 hands instead of 10?

Naturally, it won’t help. Most of those add-ons, toolbars, enhancers, optimizers, cleaners, tune-ups, guardians, defenders proved to be completely useless, if not worse than useless. In fact, if you want to speed up your computer, the first step will be locating these programs on your computer and deleting them. MacKeeper is one of those useless products that you also need to pay for in addition.

How do I actually speed up my Mac?

  1. Make sure you have enough free space. Don’t fill up your startup volume. If you do, you will see the drastic decrease in your computer’s performance, shortly followed by boot error and inability to start. According to Apple, you need at least 9 GB of free space on your boot drive in order to function properly. To check available space click on Apple logo>About this Mac>Storage. If available storage running low, consider buying an external hard drive and moving some files there, or deleting them completely.

  1. Keep your software up to date. Those updates are released for a reason – install them. For the most applications of your computer, it will be enough to go to Apple logo>Software Update or Apple logo>App Store>Update, installing available updates from there.     Update

However, third-party software, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop, needs to be updated separately. Most of the cases you will be able to update this software through Help> Check for updates. If not – check the documentation.

  1. Never install things you do not know. Before you decide to instal new software on your computer, spend a minute: use Google. Check if the software is safe. Read what people have to say about it.
  2. Do nothing. Just use your computer. Apple claims to employ 30,000 non-retail employees. Surely, those people know what they are doing. With updates being released every other week, you really should not be much worried about the wellbeing of your computer.
  3. If you have tried everything and your computer is still running slow, come round to our London Mac Repair Service, when you have a moment. We will happy to check your computer and give you a free advice.
